Green Your 'Brown Bag' Lunch
With kids going back to school, and parents watching their pennies, more are opting to pack 'brown bag' lunches. How do we do that "greenly?" First things first, get rid of the 'brown bag.'
- Get a reusable lunch box or insulated bag.
- Begin weaning yourself from baggies and aluminum foil, and start investing in reusable containers.
- Bring a drink in a reusable container; steel or stainless steel works great.
- Use cloth napkins.
Another Good Reason To Stop Using Plastics
Plastic is believed to constitute 90% of all garbage floating in oceans.
A "plastic soup" of waste floating in the Pacific Ocean is growing at an alarming rate and now covers an area twice the size of the continental United States, scientists have said. The vast expanse of debris is held in place by swirling underwater currents. About one-fifth of the junk – which includes everything from footballs and kayaks to Lego blocks and carrier bags – is thrown off ships or oil platforms. The rest comes from land.
What To Do With Those Old Computers/Printers/VCRs/TVs?
Electronic items (E-Waste) can be hazardous if not disposed of properly. These items should never be thrown out with your regular garbage. Check with your city offices to see when and where e-waste can be disposed. Many parts can be taken from the electronic devices and recycled but should be done in a proper facility, not your home.
